It's all swiped clean. But now it's all about search marketing, and as long as Google is there, even a "crap domain" can be famous and get traffic. It's all about putting in genuine effort into your site, so that your domain gains genuine value. But the point is these major domainers definitely didn't need to put in so much effort because their valuable domains already stand by themselves. These guys play the domain game so well, that you can say virtually all the best domains with latent traffic already belonged to someone in this “secret club” a long time ago. It’s all swiped clean.
