Super cheap cars of the future – The single seat VW

I have a thing for budget cars of the future, and although this piece of news is a bit old, I bet not many have heard of it. Take a peek at the new single seat Volkswagen (VW). This car is planned for the China market, and as far as I know, this will be the cheapest car in the world when it is released (slated next year).

Similar to the Tata Nano, but MUCH cheaper, this single seater car boasts of 258 miles to the gallon with a tank capacity of 1.7 gallons. This means a car can run for about 440 miles or 708 kilometers on a full tank. Not bad.

It runs at speeds of 62-74 miles per hour, or about 100-120 km/hour, which is also decent. All that for a projected price of $600 (the Nano currently costs about $2100). It is cheap enough to buy it in China, and then bring it back with you to your own country if you can’t get it anywhere else.

Yup, this car is real.

Not much else is known about this car, as Volkswagen has been keeping news of this car hushed up till today, but I’d be looking forward to when it does come out, and if this trend of super cheap cars gains more mainstream acceptance, than hey, that can only be a good thing. The only downside to this car, is you can’t take it to go out on a date with someone else, plus you wouldn’t want to bump it into anything!

  1. These little cars would be great for running errands in. My only concern would be…well…at least a second seat would be nice. I mean…where do you put your groceries that you picked up? Really…no room for a second seat means no room for much of anything else. Sure it is cheap…but does cheap also have to mean inconvenient? Make the thing just a little wider or longer and throw in a jump seat of some sort. Single parent…not in this car!

  2. Now this is what all big businesses should be doing – finding ways to help the larger populations…. cars should be affordable, and safe….

  3. I second Samanta! Cars should be affordable to the masses. In The states that would mean cars coming in NEW around 5000$ or less!

  4. It’s unbelievable. The new look car is superb. Iam afraid how it is going to success!

  5. I think we will be seeing more new cheap cars coming out in the next 1-2 years.

  6. This sounds too good to be truth. As 2010 is already here… I think none of that will really happen. 1-seater is an interesting concept, but in reality it will greatly overload the traffic, which is considerably bad in China already. You may just multiply the number of cars by four )
This is not gonna happen :)

  7. Wow! and these will surely be super cheap to insure as well. Wouldn’t take much money to replace one.

  8. I must agree with “Automotive Forums” but for another reason , with the amount of money the two north american governments have pumped into two of our big three , I am certain they will never be avaialabe to us

  9. Where (which market – showroom) are these cars avaiable?
I am interested in purchasing them, could anyone guide, please!!!

  10. this car along with Tata Nano will bring more traffic jams and accidents, if the chineese and indians drive it as they usually driving bikes and bycicles

  11. I need to purchase that car.I.m from Sri Lanka. If someone know how to purchase that please let me know. That will be easy for me to purchase that.Thanks.

  12. Very innovative..and cost effective too..
