Hi Karen, I think this is a bug in Windows XP according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823439 and maybe can be resolved by updating your Win XP.

When I run chkdsk on my laptop with Win XP it says "cannot open file for direct access. Windows has finished checking the disk." What do I do now?

I got a free auto-defragmentation utility called Diskeeper bundled with my system. An option says "boot time defragmentation" and there, you can check the box on "run chkdsk". If you are lucky as I am, Diskeeper will run Chkdsk every time you restart your computer. This way, in case of power failure, you will have Chkdsk running and if there was no improper shutdown, just press a key and Chkdsk will be aborted.

If you are unlucky, Diskeeper will successfully reset the Registry entry and so Chkdsk won't run next time and you will have to set it every time manually, making it useless. What I wonder is how "Diskeeper" can flag Chkdsk to run after each shutdown/reboot.

Thanks. Brilliant post for novice peeps around the world to easily get to know the remarkable CHKDSK.EXE util, which is (often) truly great. Awergh, on my behalf, right now it's messy. It's not CHKDSK to blame though, but this stupid TrekStor 1 TB external disk. It's around 2 years old, TrueCrypt'ed and subsequently formated entirely from scratch. Now it's starting to mess tho. I'm really scared that some day the "random I/O error" will occur on the TC header, which will be tough call. Currently running CHKDSK /R (which actually automatically includes /F), and it's going.. mediocre well..

You can also do chkdsk c: /f from the command prompt and then reboot the computer to allow chkdsk to fix hard drive errors before it loads up the windows gui (for winxp).
