Many people go around sprouting the term Web 2.0 without ever knowing the real definition of it. It’s a little funny, because it implies there was a Web 1.0, when in reality, there was never one. So how different is Web 2.0 from the older version?
If I recall, 2007 was the year that Web 2.0 was really bombarded into people’s skulls to ensure it became a global tagline. A little mystery always helps, so I guess the appeal is in not really knowing what it means?!
Some people assume it means websites having rounded corners. Others say it’s about being able to post comments or being able to tag or vote a site. Is that what it means?
According to the person who apparently first coined the term, Tim O’Reily, “Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.”
That’s still not a clear definition. We don’t know exactly, what are the rules for success. But if I were to take a guess, it would be this – user friendliness.
A more user friendly Web will be more interactive. So you find you can do lots of fancy things online, like what Facebook or MySpace or Google Earth does. If that’s Web 2.0, than there are actually few limits to what it can do.
I caught a video on YouTube which might be interesting.
